When Hurricane Georges tore through the wrapper fields at Chateau de la Fuente in 1998, the family answered with a dark Connecticut broadleaf leaf rested in Cognac barrels, and the Añejo line followed. The No. 50 is its robusto: five and a quarter inches that carry the whole Añejo character in a compact frame. It is one of the premium cigars in Dubai we keep in the humidor at our Downtown Dubai cigar house, released by the maker only in small seasonal shipments.

Flavour Notes: Earth, coffee, roasted nuts, leather and caramel.
How It Smokes: The first third opens on damp earth and dark coffee, the broadleaf giving the smoke a thick, oily texture. Through the middle, a toasted nut character moves forward and a seam of leather settles underneath it. In our reading, the final third is where caramel rises to meet the earth, rounding the full profile rather than sharpening it. The 50 ring keeps the draw dense and the smoke heavy on the palate, so this is a robusto that rewards a slow pace.
Blend Details: Made by Arturo Fuente in the Dominican Republic, the Añejo pairs an aged Connecticut broadleaf maduro wrapper, rested in Cognac barrels, with Dominican binder and filler. Carlos Fuente Jr. created the line in the years after the 1998 hurricane interrupted the OpusX wrapper supply, and it has shipped in limited batches, typically around Father's Day and the year-end holidays, ever since.
