The Don Carlos Robusto is the most direct way into the cigar Carlos Fuente Sr. built around his own palate: five inches, a 50 ring and a smooth Cameroon wrapper. Its maxim was never size but character, a dream the patriarch summed up as not to be the biggest. It sits at the centre of the Don Carlos shelf at our Downtown Dubai cigar house, among the premium cigars in Dubai we return to most.
Profile: Medium strength
Flavour Notes: Sweet ginger biscuit, candied citrus peel, spice and a nutty undertone.
How It Smokes: The first third opens with a baked sweetness close to ginger biscuit, lifted by a bright note of candied citrus peel. Through the middle, spice comes forward and the Cameroon wrapper gives the smoke a fine, dry texture. Our reading of the final third is warmer and nuttier, the sweetness easing back while a gentle spice remains. The robusto format keeps the draw easy and the burn even, and the medium profile never tips into heaviness.
Blend Details: An African Cameroon wrapper with Dominican binder and filler, rolled at Tabacalera A. Fuente in the Dominican Republic from tobaccos selected for wrapper colour and construction. The blend honours Carlos Fuente Sr., who aged its tobaccos for years before rolling.
