The numbers on the band are the story: 8-5-8 recalls a bundle format from the Fuente factory's early years, and the name stuck to one of the family's most enduring Gran Reserva sizes. In our boutique it is the Dominican cigar we reach for when a guest wants a long, even smoke with a natural Cameroon wrapper.
Profile: Mild to medium, as rated by Cigar Aficionado.
Flavour Notes: Toast, light cocoa, earth and cedar, per Cigar Aficionado.
How It Smokes: The wrapper has a slightly toothy grain, and Cigar Aficionado's tasters noted the odd sun spot. In our reading the first third opens rich and toasty, with a light cocoa edge sitting on top. Through the middle a gentle earthiness comes forward without pushing the toast aside. The finish turns cedary and dry, closing the toro on wood rather than sweetness. The draw on a 47 ring keeps the pace unhurried across the full six inches.
Blend Details: Made by Tabacalera A. Fuente in the Dominican Republic, the Flor Fina 8-5-8 sits in the Gran Reserva family and is offered by the maker in several wrappers. This is the natural version: Cameroon wrapper over Dominican binder and filler.
