Needle is the foundation of Casdagli's Cypher 3311 line. Its name recalls how Major A.T. Casdagli needled his captors, stitching "God save the King" in Morse code into a tapestry the guards then put on display. The cigar is a 7 by 48 box-pressed Churchill, each one in its own blue varnished coffin, and our Downtown Dubai cigar house holds it in the slide-top box of eight among its premium cigars in Dubai.
Profile: Medium strength, medium to full body (as published by Casdagli).
Flavour Notes: Cream, almonds, marzipan, baking spices and pepper (Casdagli).
How It Smokes: Our reading of the Needle starts with deep cream and almond, the silky, floral wrapper setting a refined first third. The press and narrower gauge concentrate the smoke, and through the middle marzipan joins the almond. The final third grows spicier, with baking spices and pepper adding a firmer edge to the cream. It is a long, composed smoke that keeps its sweetness to the end.
Blend Details: Needle is made for Casdagli at the IGM Cigars boutique factory in San José, Costa Rica. It uses the same exotic Costa Rican fillers as the Lorenz and Enigma, joined by Peruvian and Dominican leaf, with a Costa Rican Puriscal binder and an Ecuadorian Habano Claro Colorado wrapper. A share of the proceeds from every Cypher 3311 cigar goes to the Red Cross.
