The E.P. Carrillo La Historia Dona Elena carries the name of Ernesto Perez-Carrillo's wife and gives his family blend an elegant 6 1/8 x 50 Toro frame. Dark San Andrés Maduro leaf, a full body and a long, chocolate-rich smoke make it one of the E.P. Carrillo cigars in Dubai we reach for after dinner.

Flavour Notes: Cocoa, dark chocolate, espresso, almond, toasted coconut and earth.
Ours opens on cocoa and roasted coffee, dense and smooth, with the dark wrapper giving a light sweetness on the lips. Through the first third almond and a touch of toasted coconut appear, softening the edges. The long frame keeps the smoke cool and lets the middle stay round, with dark chocolate and espresso trading places on the palate. In the last third earth rises underneath and the finish grows longer and drier. It suits the late hour, a quiet room and a strong coffee or a dark spirit beside it.
La Historia is Ernesto Perez-Carrillo's family line, rolled at Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic. A Mexican San Andrés Maduro wrapper is laid over an Ecuadorian Sumatra binder and a filler of Nicaraguan and Dominican tobacco. The line was named Cigar Aficionado's #2 Cigar of the Year in 2014.
