The Gurkha Heritage Maduro Robusto is what Gurkha calls a double maduro: dark maduro tobacco in both the San Andrés wrapper and the Brazilian Arapiraca binder, an uncommon pairing. Made in Nicaragua, this one is a robusto with a slightly wider ring, compact but generous, and one of the fuller cigars in our Downtown Dubai humidor.
Profile: Full
Flavour Notes: Cocoa and espresso over an earthy base.
Ours opens dark and earthy, the San Andrés leaf setting a dense, rich tone from the first draw. Cocoa follows quickly, and by the middle third a note like fresh espresso joins it, slightly bitter in the good way. The double maduro construction gives the smoke real weight, and the body builds to full. Towards the finish the earth returns underneath the cocoa and coffee, long and deep. It is a cigar for after dinner, not before it.
A Mexican San Andrés maduro wrapper covers a Brazilian Arapiraca binder and a filler of Brazilian and Nicaraguan tobacco. The use of maduro leaf in both wrapper and binder is unusual, and the cigar is made in Nicaragua. Gurkha rates it full in strength.
