Coloniales joined the Trinidad range in 2003, when the brand first stepped beyond its single Fundadores. It is a classic corona proportion with Trinidad's own factory vitola, also called Coloniales, and the pigtail cap that marks every cigar of the house. Among the cuban cigars in Dubai that suit an hour rather than an evening, this is one our boutique keeps close at hand.
Profile: Medium (Habanos brand strength).
Flavour Notes: Toasty and floral, then chocolate, spice and a pronounced candied pecan (Cigar Aficionado, 92 points).
How It Smokes: Our reading of the Coloniales begins toasty and floral, the draw slightly firm as the 44 ring settles in. By the middle the floral side gives way to chocolate and a gentle spice, and a candied pecan note comes forward with real clarity. The last third keeps that nutty sweetness against the spice, and the corona format keeps the flavours tight and focused from start to finish.
Blend Details: Trinidad was created in 1969 and for decades served only as a diplomatic gift of the Cuban state, becoming available to smokers in 1998. Coloniales arrived in 2003 together with Reyes and Robustos Extra, alongside a refreshed brand image. The cigars were long made at El Laguito and are today produced in Pinar del Río, totally by hand with long filler from Vuelta Abajo.
